What tests should I have done to find out how my health is?

This is a question that at first seems easy to answer, but I'm going to explain how its evaluation, interpretation, and conclusion is a true art.

Just as we can put dozens of foods on our table and not know what to do with them when cooking them, the same happens with analytical parameters; we can see them in an analysis and not know what to do to understand what they are trying to show us.

Next, I'm going to show you the true art of analytical interpretation. I'll explain it using an analogy about food, so you can understand it better.

The art of analytical interpretation

A true professional in analytical interpretation could be considered like a chef, but with different ingredients; instead of food, analytical parameters.

You open your refrigerator (in this case, an analytical framework), you assess all the food you have (in this case, analytical parameters), and you begin to build something with them that will lead you to understand what is happening inside the person, and in this way plan and develop the best therapeutic approach (nutrition and supplementation).

It could be said that the analytical chef knows and understands each and every one of his ingredients (parameters), knows the reason for their alteration, and, in addition, knows how to relate those same parameters with others that may be altered, in order to give a deeper and more complete interpretation.

Isn't it true that when you combine several foods and cook them, you often end up with dishes that are both more nutritious and tasty?
The same applies to analytical parameters; one alone can tell us something, but when we interpret them with all the others, we can reach incredibly interesting places in terms of internal knowledge (physiological, biochemical, macro and micronutritional).

So, what do we need to consider when evaluating a test result in order to understand our physical and mental health?

Most importantly:

Knowing which analytical parameters are most suitable for each person, since each person is unique and needs specific and personalized analysis.

We could make the same analogy with food;

Each person needs a specific diet, specific foods and specific quantities, and the same applies to analytical parameters; each person is in a specific health circumstance and needs a specific and personalized analysis.

"What I need is not the same as what you need, and what you need is different from what your neighbor on the fifth floor needs." Understanding this basic principle will allow us to plan the best analytical strategy, which will be the most concrete and important one for each person.

But even so, I'm often asked, "But Dani, could you tell me or show me an analytical recommendation with the parameters you think are the most important for us to take into account?"

Since my intention and main purpose in life is to help all those who need it, I am going to show you a biochemical profile that I have established as the most important to take into account as a starting point, and in this way you can tell your doctor or therapist who is treating you, since in this way they will be able to get a lot of information (provided they know how to interpret it - which is another point -, one of the most important).

Okay, it might seem like that would be enough, right?

Everyone I've recommended this test to says that when they go to the lab, the person who takes their blood sample is surprised to see so many parameters and have to draw so many blood bottles, since 99% of the time they usually perform the simplest tests, with only a few analytical parameters of interest.

Well, this analytical adventure has only just begun; this would be (making the same food analogy) like the starter of a menu; the first course, second course, and dessert are still missing.

The human body is incredibly complex (I like to call it a micro-universe), given all its mysterious and incredible functioning (physiological, biochemical, genetic), so being able to study it in its maximum depth should be the main objective before recommending a certain diet, supplementation and even exercise or sports activity.

What else can we do, besides studying that biochemical profile I've shown you?

We need to carry out even more specific and concrete tests, which are normally done in private laboratories, since conventional ones do not usually perform them.

Given that there are hundreds of special tests (beyond the conventional biochemical profile), I would like to focus on the 3 main ones, which I usually recommend to almost all patients and athletes who come to the consultation:

Mineralogram

Study of heavy metals and minerals

Adrenal stress

Study of the circadian rhythm - cortisol, DHEA, melatonin, and I hope that in the future they will introduce oxytocin

Gut microbiota

Study of the entire digestive landscape, microbiological, parasitological, inflammation and intestinal permeability, bile acids, etc.

These three analytical superheroes open up a world of incredibly interesting information, allowing us to understand the possible causes of the internal imbalance that led to illness, functional disorder, or an inability to perform at our best in sports. It's important that you consider all the tests I've shown you, as they will shed light on what's happening internally, helping us identify the cause or causes of the person's decline in health.

Only in this way can a therapeutic approach with sound judgment (nutritional and supplementation) be established, which will allow us to help the person to restore their health as quickly as possible.

Unlike other types of therapies, which only address the sign or symptom (whether through medications or natural products - it doesn't matter if it's with the little red or green pill), turning the person into an eternal patient, unable to solve their problems, polymedicated and polysupplemented.

I mention this because in some situations I have heard the following comment; I cannot afford to spend money on these tests (and in the vast majority of cases it is said by someone who has been to several therapists and has taken or is taking more than 5 supplements daily, and the curious thing is that they are still the same.

If we were to do an economic study on everything that has been spent on consultations and everything that has been spent and is being spent on supplements, I am sure that it would be about 20 to 30 times greater than what it would cost to carry out a complete and exhaustive study at an analytical level, and evaluated and interpreted by a well-prepared professional in the field of scientific (orthomolecular) nutrition.

After more than 15 years as a therapist specializing in this type of orthomolecular therapy, I have come to the following conclusion. If you carry out a comprehensive study like the one I just showed you, and you know how to interpret the information provided by the tests and analyses, create a correct and optimal dietary and supplementation plan, and the person applies everything we have proposed in this therapeutic approach, the number of consultations should not exceed 6. In other words, in less than 6 months, they should recover their health (understanding that there will be very complex and difficult situations that require a little more time).

The failure to obtain data and information (through analysis) leads us to take a therapeutic approach focused on the consequence (the symptom or sign), because unless the therapist is a fortune teller, they will not know where the cause or origin lies that has led to the destabilization of all their organs and systems, and, consequently, it will be approached from a simplistic and reductionist perspective, in which the person being treated may prepare to be a long-term patient.

We have at our disposal something wonderful in terms of what science has given us (tests, analyses, diagnostic methods, etc.) and if we are intelligent enough and capable of taking advantage of all that knowledge to apply it from an integrative perspective (something that conventional medicine does not do) we can go much further and obtain much better results at a therapeutic level.

Always remember this whenever you're about to start any kind of diet or supplementation program, and ask yourself the big question: Have I had enough tests and analyses done to understand what's going on with me, what my current situation is, and know in detail which diet and supplements are best suited to me at this precise moment in my life, so I can know which nutritional and supplementation strategies to follow to achieve optimal physical and emotional well-being?

I'd like to know what first came to mind after asking this question, but regardless of what you felt and thought, I invite you to reflect on everything I've just explained in this article. If you're open-minded enough to allow new ideas and different approaches to flow, you'll most likely embark on a new path that will lead you to where you've always wanted to be: that place of complete health where you can enjoy life with greater satisfaction and fulfillment.

If at any time you feel the need to carry out a complete analytical study, and have it evaluated and interpreted from a much more complete and profound perspective than you have obtained elsewhere, I invite you to be seen by any of the therapists at Nutrición Científica Barcelona, or to access the new service called analysis and report.

I personally perform this new analysis and reporting service.
I study each and every one of the tests that the person (or therapist who wants to understand the patient's condition in greater depth) has until I reach a conclusion about what the cause or causes that may have led to the illness or functional disorder could have been, and in this way be able to understand what is happening to them in order to address it therapeutically.

A report in which you will not only be able to understand what is happening internally, but you will also obtain a series of recommendations (dietary and supplementation) that will help the person achieve a state of complete health.
